STATEMENT ON PERSONAL WATERCRAFT (PWC)

The Friends of Pleasant Bay, a community based, not-for-profit organization committed to "preserving and enhancing the natural, visual and historic resources of Pleasant Bay", finds that the use of Personal Watercraft threatens the very essence of the Bay that we are pledged to protect.

The issues of safety and the threat to the environment have been widely discussed and we agree with those concerns. The impact on the character of the Bay is more difficult to express, but the sight and sound of a PWC at full throttle has a significant detrimental effect on the tranquility and character of the Bay, as we have traditionally known it.

We support the development of regulations on the use of PWCs in Pleasant Bay that ensure the preservation of our precious natural resources and retain the historic character of the Bay, and applaud the Cape Cod National Seashore for its decisive action to ban the operation of PWCs, and the Selectmen of the Pleasant Bay Alliance towns for seeking uniform regulations. For many of the same reasons that prompted their decision we support regulations addressing the issues of speed, noise, emissions, environmentally sensitive areas, and enforcements consistent with the Seashore's action throughout the entire Bay.
